Besides the fact I already knew many things in this chapter previously, I liked reading it because Shubin's vivid personal experience was like reading a detective novel. How he sufferred to discover a small piece of fossil, or perhaps a rock, gave me a strong impression, and I was some how happy when he started to make a progress and figure out his own knowhow. Reading this chapter gave me more of a lesson, which is to not give up, than information. However, if I have to pick something that I learned new, I would choose this quote -> "At this time, too, teeth are replaced only once per lifetime, as in us. We can trace all these changes in the fossil record, especially from certain sites in Europe, South Africa and China." I believe that many people already know that human being's teeth are replaced once in their life, but they(including me) wouldn't have known that extinct animals also had the commonness. If I were to object this statement, I would probably use an example of shark, because based on my shallow knowledge, sharks can repalce their teeth more than once in their life and the process[replacing the teeth] could be done in few seconds if their teeth were broken. Anyway I am finding myself sympathizing with the author's true experience, and I am actually excited to learn new things.
