I was interest how Shubin introduced this chapter by giving an example of the time he bisected the skull. This was a good start because it made me remember the time during my freshman year when I tried to bisect a baby pig's skull and I accidentally made brain pudding inside the skull... good times. Anyways, it was interesting how Shubin worked all alone at night with a bunch of dead bodies. I would never want to do that!
I realized how difficult it is do study the anatomy of a human brain. It's surprised how gruesome it is to have a look at the human brain. Also, the complexity of the human head was astonishing. I never knew that our heads were consisted of so many parts. Especially with all the different nerves connect to our brains. Not only were the different nerves interesting, but I found out the different parts of muscles to be even more interesting because the nerves are the one that controls the muscles of our face. The part where it talks about the skull plates made me understand why babies heads are so fragile. I also learned how important the arches "define segments of bones, muscles, arteries, and nerves" (Shubin 89). Discovering that we have similar arches as sharks kind of interested me. The Amphioxus amazed me with the fact that we had similarities with them too. Like how we used to have a notochord as an embryo. Overall, this chapter was full of information for me to take in, but it was still an interesting chapter.
