Sharkboy and Wormgirl. The sequal?
This chapter again, brought me to a land of confusion. Good thing I decided not take anatomy or this is what I'd be going through everyday. Chapter 5, Getting Ahead, is pretty much about the head of a human being related to that of a shark, and later, worms. Shubin classifies the different types of structures that make up our head, and how they head develops into what it is. There are 4 arch's, each one leading into a different feature of the face and head. For example, the first arch of both humans and sharks forms the jaws. The second, for human forms the three bones in our ears, the "stapes" and some other structures at the base of the head and the throat. Likewise, humans and sharks share alot of the same types of nerves. For example, Shubin talks about the Trigeminal, Facial, Glossopharyngeal, and Vagus, each which both Humans and Sharks alike, share. I also thought that it was easier to understand the human head structure once Shubin classified it as three sections: the plates, blocks, and rods. The plates are the outer-most layer, and the reason why our head feels like a rock on the top and around. Under that is the platform that holds the brain up, and is full of nerves running through it. And the third structure is the type of bone that makes up our jaws. It's really shocking that I'm not finding this book boring yet, because Shubin has kept me on my toes. I keep flipping the pages wishing the chapter would end soon, but I never realize how fast I get through each chapter. It's probably because Shubin makes it alot easier to understand difficult concepts. What I still don't get is how our nerves send signals to our brain so fast. The sensations of touch, sight, smell, and taste come back to our brain so fast that it doesn't seem like the brain has time to process the information. I guess that one of the wonders of life, and it's truly amazing how it works.
