Once again, Shubin surprises the reader with his unique way of hooking the reader with
a great introduction.. I personally really like the way he introduces each chapter because
Shubin truly endeavors to grab the reader's attention.. not in the middle of the chapter or in the end of the chapter.. but from the very first sentence of the chapter.. (one of the reasons why Shubin's a great author). In terms of the context, I feel that Shubin gave the reader a brief, thorough description of what the rest of the chapter will be about. I found it quite interesting that it takes complex interplay of our muscles for the simplest motions was very shocking, and unique in a sense as well.
Shubin discussed Owen's scientific views as well as Darwin's and how both of their views contributed to "finding our inner fish". I found it quite creepy when Shubin said that our hands are a "signature for who we are" because when you really repeat that phrase in your hand several times.. it seems quite foolish that our hands represent someone as a whole. However, Shubin's response to his view in why our hands make a tremendous connection to us as a whole made me think thoroughly and cannot help but understand and agree. In addition, Shubin fills the reader in with great information in the journey of exploring what nature has to offer in a chronological order followed by significant diagrams. The connection he makes to the diagram and what he has to say helps the reader understand his purpose on a higher level than a reader would simply with just diagrams alone.. or the information alone...
I can honestly say that every page i come across in this book surprises me with information that i've never thoroughly meditated upon or new concepts that Shubin has to reveal..
