Chapter 3- Handy Genes

Like Jaime said, I was very surprised to find out that the Tiktaalik was discovered in 2004. During the first 2 chapters I had thought that the fossils had been discovered a long time ago.

This chapter immediately fascinated me because I got to learn more about how we became to be. I think that it would be fun to do all the experiments that Shubin talks about in his novel. How interesting would it be to know that you changed a fish's fin into a human hand?

I had no idea that ZPA is what causes the pinky and thumbs to be differently shaped and as Jaime said, how a small tissue could be so powerful. If the Sonic Hedgehog activates or deactivates at the wrong times the creature can turn out to be malformed.

So far, I think that this chapter is the most interesting. I've always had a keen interest in learning how genes and DNA and reading this chapter has intensified that fasination.
