According to this chapter, Neil Shubin said “Tiktaalik had a shoulder, elbow, and wrist composed of the same bones as an upper arm, forearm, and wrist in a human” (39). From the words it seems the author wanted to show that ancient fish and human actually had some connection of the body part. Further more he mentioned that Tiktaalik might be able to do a push-up. I would agree that it was a creative imagination. When we did push-up, our hands needed to be flat on the ground, our elbow needed to bend, and we used our chest muscles to move up and down. However, I didn’t think Tiktaalik’s fins had these muscles to hold its body. Could you imagine that a fish had six packs? It was really hard for me to imagine a fish doing push-up while looking at the picture on page 40.
On the other hand I agree with Sir Charles Bell said “the structure of the hand was ‘perfect’ because it was complex and ideally arranged for the way we live” (29). I think hands are really really important to us, because we need our hands to do almost everything in our daily life. Imagining For me, if I don’t have my two hands, I will be really hard to survive in this world. For example, I hurt my right index finger last two weeks when I was trying to open a can. But it caused me lots of troubles, like when washing my hair, writing with pencil, or even holding chopsticks. So those people without both hands still live well in this complicated world really deserve our highly respects.
