Chapter Three: Handy Genes

It is difficult to fathom the development of the hands and its identical relationship with other animals as well. I am repeatedly amazed at the structure of our complex bodies and its systematic ways. Through the description of the role of our genes I am able to understand why the DNA is called the blueprint to life. The duplicating process made possible by the Sonic hedgehog protein(which I found the name very amusing) in the fins was very shocking in how this single protein would change the result so drastically. It assured me that the role of even the slightest variation in genes resulted in a severe change in the outcome.

  1. I agree with Heidi about the sonic hedgehog, it was very amusing on how they made that name. I kind of got confused at the part where they made the word sonic fit in with the word hedgehog. But i suddenly went back and re read it and i understood. The fins were also very shocking on how the protein changed the entire fin. When i first read the part where the protein would change everything i didn't believe it but when i understood the process it really helped.
