Teeth Everywhere (Ch. 4)

Shubin's statement on how, "Little fish developed armor, big fish obtained bigger jaws to crack the armor, and so on," (76), reminded me of Darwin's theory, survival of the fittest. It amazes me how teeth, originated as tools used to consume food, turned out to serve as other functions that are present in all human bodies. Just as the ostracoderms were shielded by their skulls that were made up of teeth, humans and many other living creatures are protected by their skeletons.
I felt as if Shubin's intended meaning in the conclusion to the chapter was that he wanted his readers to learn that all living things have evolved over time from the same origin. All living things are physically varied depending on the environment in which they live in.
Because of Shubin's passion and commitment to learning and discovering more about the past and its connection with us humans, I look forward to reading about more evidence that he has to buttress his belief.
