This chapter was particularly confusing for me. Its hard for me to think that such a little thing can influence so much of how you will grow. The paleontologists and DNA researchers work with each other to explain how genes can turn off and on based on you bodies appearance. This brings insight on actual mutations of people one sees on the street, and it happens as early as the embryo. What i found the most confusing was when they were injecting the embryo to see "whether Sonic hedgehog" is active in the development of skates"(56). I was puzzled with the places they were developed, such as the pinky, what happens when you add vita men A, and how it would develop into the mirror-image fin. I have slight understanding of it after re-reading, but it is still strange to me.
The most interesting thing though, was the ZPA, which is the explanation of how we have fingers on our hand. The pinky would be made with a higher concentration of cells, where as the thumb would have more diffused molecules. Also, i found it funny that they were able to discover the sonic hedgehog by experimenting on fruitflies. Who knows, but it seems that all living things are connected one way or another.
