Chapter 3: Handy Genes

I must say, this chapter was quite something. The actual hands on experimentaion with altering the genetic structure with different chemicals is marvelous. If only we could do this with humans...producing a super race of greatness. Taking the genes of Michael Jordan and morphing them with some of Einstein's genes, producing a intellectual super athlete, or if things went bad, producing results similar to Will Smith's adventures in 2011 New York.
The section talking about how the genes in all cells are the same, but each one has a different function due to different features being used and different genetic codes being activated is intriguing. It is like everyone being paired with an iPhone, but everyone using different applications of it to do their respective job. This aspect of the genetic code that makes our body is almost unbelievable. The amount of capability in this code of DNA; being able to build the cells out of a set of 23 chromosome pairs that are consistent throughout the whole body. This on-off switch inside the body is also incredible. The body knows when to turn off and on certain things on its own, and if it fails to do so, we are born with defects. Our genetic insiders are quite amazing.
Next, the ZPA and "Sonic Hedgehog" system that makes our thumbs different from our pinkies is another part of the body that is remarkable. This genetic code and tissue complex is able to differentiate our body parts into effeciet structures that are not symetrical is something we must give great thanks to Sega for! The fact that these parts reside in other animals, from sharks to chickens makes it all the more amazing. Relating it back to chapter two, either we are all originating from a the same "common ancestor", or there is a "blueprint" of genetics throughout the living worlds. Something to contemplate and ponder in one's free time....
