Pearly Whites

This chapter was a releif to read after the last one, even though I know that we are getting ready to go into a class where alot of technical reading will be done. Chapter 4, Teeth Everywhere was a very interesting chapter for a couple main reasons. For one, I found it interesting that hydroxyapatite is what gives the enamel its color. I always thought that teeth were just white because, well...they were. I never knew the reason behind it, and Shubin gave me the whole history. What else I found interesting was the trip to Nova Scotia, and Shubin being in the field without any luck finding fossils. When Shubin was describing his experience in the field, about how he wasn't able to find any fossils for weeks, I thought to myself that he must've had alot of patience and stamina to keep going out there to search. Not only that, but must have been very zealous about paleontology to not give up hope. And then, he prevailed and became excellent at finding fossils. Sounds like a cliche story doesn't it? Anyways, the last thing that caught my attention was the fact that hair, feathers, breasts, and teeth all form in the same way. When I figured this out, I started understanding what Shubin meant by finding your inner fish, because now Im starting to relate human characteristics with other animals.
