In exchange for the complex material that we all came across in chapter 3... in
chapter 4, we all came across a very lengthy chapter with a lot of context. Even
though the past few chapters were full of surprises, once again Shubin endeavors
to point out the significance of teeth and that yes... teeth are everywhere. Once again, Shubin makes a great introduction to this chapter to reveal what teeth can do for paleontologists, other animals, and for us. Who would've knew that teeth plays one of the leading roles to an animal's diet, and how different ways of feeding came about through fossil records..
I really liked how Shubin went into detail about his very first expedition as an
archaeologist and how his desire to search for teeth established his career.
Throughout his mission with his fellow peers who were experts in distinguishing fossils, I liked how even though Shubin ended up with nothing in his bag for several weeks, in the end of his expedition, he was able to go back home with no regrets and the great experiences and skills he obtained. I like how I can see Shubin's expedition in a bigger picture.. relating his struggles to mine. I saw that his journey required perfect timing, experience, great dedication to discover. Due to such difficult obstacles, Shubin and his group were able to discover rare tritheledonts from South Africa and Nova Scotia.
Even though Shubin and his group returned to the same location the following summer, and saw that all the tritheledont that they could've found were forever gone.... they were able to gain a great experience while they were near the volcanoes. Even though they were at a location where nothing can be found... Shubin and his group thought outside the box and were creative enough to be on the lookout for items that may help their studies in any way possible. Fortunately, they were able to find what they were looking for.
I found it strange but unique that teeth also reveal the origin of an entire new method of making organs. It sounds pretty weird how teeth plays a role in the development of our skin. Overall, teeth opens up a lot of doors and without it, we wouldn't be able to discover majority of the things we obtain today. This chapter was long, but I honestly found it worth it. Great chapter. Great chapter.
