Chapter 7:Adventures in Bodybuilding

This chapter talked about the entire body as a whole and how it was formed. It revealed the importance of cells and how our cells create our body all together. The biological glue that holds our cells together allows cells to communicate and forms much of our structure. An exact amount of collagen, hydroxyapatite, and proteoglycan can determine the function and layout of the bones in our body. After reading about the importance and role of skeletons, I thought it was amazing that without skeletons, we would be formless masses of goo. I learned that our skeleton's strength is based on the sizes and shapes of our bones, and also the molecular properties of our bones. The connection Shubin made between humans and sponges was interesting; the sponge formed a new body after the parts were separated. Both the body and sponges consist of a form of silica and calcium carbonate. Shubin makes these fascinating comparisons and continue to reveal the similarity between our structure and other living creatures.
