The title was not as appealing to the senses but the first thought that occurred to me was the last eye check up I had right after school ended. My eyes are horrible, they got worse twice the amount expected. My glasses are like those worn like grammas and grandpas and after reading this chapter I felt as though I should have taken better care of them.
Eyes are unique. They are one of the only kind of evidence that is limited to people about our past. The softest and strongest organ in the body is, I believe, the eye. the eye constantly moves and is the most difficult to find evidence to in the fossil records. the complexity of how light travels in the eye and how it travels to pick up a definite image makes me respect doctors more and more. They understand the workings of a camera-like eye which makes me wonder if they also know how to work a camera as well or even devise one. The mechanisms of the eye can truly scare a person because not only are the pupils coming in out out of size but also the function of the eye is taken for granted. Especially for colors. Even though the majority of people are not color blind, the people who are cannot experience the wonders of seeing in full color. According to psychology, colors are used to elicit emotions such as blue for security and calmness which is used for many advertisements. The people don't have the opportunity to see this color and so vision is very important. Shubin allowed me to see from another perspective of having vision to being color blind.
What also seemed truly remarkable and very sensational was the Pax 6 gene for determining if the species will have no eyes or be blind. The experiments that the scientists conducted on many specimens intrigued me on how an eye can be grown almost anywhere. the connection from insects to mammals with the same gene allowed me to imagine the kind of sensation this is. Eyes bring us closer to every single living species in the world because of the connection that everything has to DNA which contributes to sensory organs such as the most important looking eye.
