CH. 3 Handy Genes

Taking honors bio in freshman year felt complicated as it was when getting into the fine details of DNA, but i never anticipated just how much more detailed the human body could get. After reading this week's chapter, I felt as though what I had already learned barely touched upon the complexity of the human development, particularly when learning about the impact that DNA, ZPA, hedgehog, and lastly sonic hedgehog has on our bodies. It's almost ridiculous to think about how such microscopic differences are what separate how a thumb and pinkie are developed during the early stages of an embryo.

The most interesting part of this week's reading, however, had to be the skeletal structure of our hands and arms, and how they are similar to virtually every animal, whether it's the fins of a shark to the wings of a chicken. No matter how different we may seem, the similarities that Shubin finds between humans and all other creatures seem to go on and on. I am anticipating just how much further this connection will get.
