After reading through chapter three, I realized how thankful I should be to the Sonic hedgehog for doing its job both properly and in timely order during my early stages of development. A possible result of an abortive Sonic hedgehog was explained as Shubin said, "Occasionally, when things go wrong with Sonic hedgehog, the hand ends up looking like a broad paddle..." (pg.53). This affected me by making me much more appreciative of having simple, yet complex, things such as my whole set of ten fingers. It is quite surprising what one discovers when thinking about how much our fingers play a role in our daily lives.
I also found Shubin's explanation on how humans have a relationship with other living creatures quite shocking. This is because I personally find difficulty in persuading myself to believe that such distincly different living creatures, including humans, share a similarity with each other. Nonetheless, I look forward to what Shubin has for me in chapter four.
