Chapter 3: Handy Genes

This chapter was, for me, the most interesting. I was really amazed at how genes were able to turn on and off at certain times in order to make each body what they look like. I normally would have been bored and really confused by a description of a scientific experiment, but Shubin writes in such a way where it's clear and very engaging. I was really amazed by how a small injection of the Sonic Hedgehog protein could completely alter the development of a living being.
I liked how Shubin really emphasizes how deeply the connection between living creatures run. I mean, I never thought that human beings could be remotely related to flies, skates or sharks (I considered chickens, but still, it was still interesting to read about how exactly we're connected). I thought it was cool how Shubin spends so much time studying animals just to learn more about our own.
