Chapter 3: Handy Genes

Just from reading the title, I knew this chapter would interest me because I have always found genetics intriguing.

What fascinated me the most was reading about the ZPA tissue. Just by changing the position of this tissue, scientists can create a duplicate set of digits in the embryo of a certain creature. This helped me understand how people are born with mutations. If the ZPA tissue doesn't function properly, the creature will have an extra set of digits or an extra limb. To think that even a small patch of tissue has such a drastic effect on the overall outcome of an animal! I also thought it was interesting that every animal has the Sonic hedgehog gene. I never realized how connected organisms truly are.

Throughout this chapter, I thought Shubin did a great job of explaining everything. Once again, the visuals he included enhanced the text and helped me to better understand what he was talking about.
