Chapter One: Finding Your Inner Fish

By reading only the first chapter of Your Inner Fish, I learned how eloquently Shubin expressed his hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm. Though the topic of evolution is rarely discussed in my family and religion, I entered this book with etiquette and patience.
Shubin and his team's dedication to the expedition was extremely shocking in many ways. While I was in the midst of the chapter, I wondered, "How can they keep going out there (Arctic Circle) again and again without luck?". The answer to my question was answered finally at the end of the chapter as Jason discovered a pile of fossil fish bones. Even though all the bones were of fish that had already been discovered by paleontologists and were predominantly well-known in Eastern Europe, it provided the team with one last spark of encouragement as they set out their last expedition in 2004. The one thing that surprised me while reading the first chapter was how Shubin and his team did not loose hope after five years. The way Shubin described his uncontrollable zealousness, I started to feel as if I was right there next to him as he was flipping the rocks and cracking the ice; soon disclosing the one thing that changed his life forever: Tiktaalik. Seeing Shubin's zeal is extremely fascinating. I am excited to read the rest of the novel, and learn how Shubin unfolds his discoveries.
