Chapter 2: Getting a Grip

Hoping that the book would offer the same vitality as it did in Chapter 1, I started Chapter 2 with full of excitement. Without any surprise, once again, Chapter 2 did not disappoint my jittery eyes. When I began to start this chapter, I was so happy to see Shubin finally talk about the human anatomy. Unlike last chapter, I was joyful to see him actually relate evolution to the human structures directly. In the brief description of his dissection, I was amused to read about different parts that exhibited throughout the course of his lab. Although I did not see the dissection for myself, remotely, the feeling of disgust started to elicit inside of me. However, I thought, "I'm a human myself." I read on and became interested in the experiments Shubin conducted until he brought the subject of the hand. Through his anecdotes, I was able to realize the importance and complexity of hands. Moreover, the diagrams Shubin included to clear the ambiguity led me to believe evolution was more of a plan than coincidence. They gave me a clear idea of how animals are closely related to humans such as the complexities of the limbs. Through this chapter, I was able to see the different aspects and complexities of the bones of different animals. I hope the subject of genes in the next chapter offers the same interest I had in Chapter 2.
