Chapter 2: Getting a Grip

Chapter 2 was so much like chapter 1. Shubin was able to show characteristics of a truthful and honest man. He was willing to state that he had a "cocky self-confidence" (29).

Shubin used personal thoughts such as the connection to the cadaver's hand in page 29. Shubin was able to show and make the reader feel what he felt during his experience in the quote "The imagined world in no way prepared me for the experience" (28). I admired his use of similies and metaphors such as when he said "opening these kinds of plaster coverings in the lab is much like encountering a time capsule" (39). These comparisons and connections gave me the chance to slightly experience what he experienced. I felt involved as I read chapter 2 as if in some lecture when he used "you" and when he told the reader to bend the wrist or fingers. Shubin made me experience as he informed me about the joints and bones moving.

When Shubin talked about Owen, Owen's thoughts and beliefs were portrayed as clearly understood and respected. Shubin also stated everyone's views when he talked about the creature Lepidosiren paradoxa. He stated the discoverers', scientists' and even the locals' views. "Locals found them delicious" (33). He was also humorous when he said that and "capable of doing pushups" (39) and "drop and give us twenty" (40). His humor made me interested to read more. I hope chapter 3 is similar to chapter 2.
